Adult circumcisions

Adult circumcisions are performed in men from the ages of puberty and older. In adults, we perform the circumcisions under local anaesthetic using the popular “sleeve” technique.

Circumcisions are performed safely under local anaesthesia by performing a ring-block around the base of the penis using a very-fine needle and novel pain-eliminating technique. Adults are naturally apprehensive about any pain encountered both during and after the procedure and our aim with the ring block is to completely eliminate all pain from the procedure and for about 4 to 6 hours after the procedure as well.

After the anaesthetic takes effect, a rim of foreskin is taken off the penis and depending on your particular preference, this can be performed loosely or tightly with a high or low ring line. Some stitching is necessary after the procedure and we use dissolving stitches on the skin which will fall off by themselves in 10 to 14 days. A light and protective dressing is applied and some aftercare instructions are given with advice and our 24 hour phone number in case of any emergency.

We have undertaken numerous adult circumcisions with excellent results and no complications to date.

Preparation before the procedure

In adults and teenagers, a shower/bath and cleansing with the foreskin retracted is advised as this keeps the penis clean at the time of operation and minimises the infection rates. It is also advisable to trim or shave the pubic hair to prevent it getting caught in the dressings. We would advise that adults wear comfortable loose-fitting boxer shorts and avoid tight trousers or jeans whilst attending the clinic for the operation as well as after the procedure for a few days.

After the procedure

Your may feel some discomfort for the first few weeks and if this is the case, we would advise you to take some Paracetamol (over the counter) 1g up to 4 times a day. You may also wish to take some nurofen or ibuprofen 400mg with food up to a maximum of three times a day.As above, loose fitting underwear is advised. The dressing should be left on for at least 48 hours. After this time, no further dressing is required and you can shower and clean as normal. It is advised to keep the area dry. The circumcision is complete when you leave the clinic and there is no ring left on it such as in a child. You will have some dissolving sutures left on which should fall off by themselves in 10 to 14 days.

Return to work

We would advise you to take a few days off work following the circumcision, however, some adults return to work by the next day. We would advise you to avoid heavy lifting for about 10 days and then gradually return to full function.

Sexual activity after circumcision

You should be able to return to normal sexual activity at approximately 6 weeks after your procedure. Prior to this, the healing is not complete and sex will be both painful and you risk breakdown of the wound.

Driving after circumcision

With regards to driving after the operation, you can only legally drive if you feel that you are able to make a complete emergency stop. As the anaesthetic will still be effective by the time you leave clinic, we would advise that you can drive home should you choose to do so.
